SUFI ROCK MUSIC / KABIR
About Kaashi :
The Story Begins ...
Ida, a whirlwind of ideas and even fierier opinions, was wrestling with an amplifier outside the electrical engineering lab. Suddenly, a quieter figure with thoughtful eyes and a gentle smile appeared, offering ice cream. It was Pingla, a fellow engineering student.

A mutual appreciation for the raw energy of rock music that pulsed through blaring concert sparked an unlikely connection. They bonded over bootleg tapes of Iron Maiden and late-night headbanging to Megadeth and Metallica. They dreamed of escaping the rigid curriculum and forming a band that would blast their angst and aspirations across the campus.
Life, however, happened. They did what they had to do with family, jobs and other responsibilities. They did keep in touch, but the spark had gone. One day they stumbled upon a Kabir concert, and it changed their lives. Around the same time, Pingla had been profoundly moved by a recording of Kumar Gandharva– the devotional songs imbued with a raw, almost mystical intensity. He felt a stirring within him, a desire to connect his musical leanings with something deeper.
Their reunion sparked a creative combustion. The hard-edged rock they loved began to fuse with these ancient voices. Ida's electric guitar found a new voice in the yearning cries of the Sufi poets, while Pingla’s melodies came out of thin air, echoing the rhythmic pulse of devotional chants. Their jam sessions on roof top music room began. The raw energy remained, but now it carried a weight, a spiritual undercurrent that was both powerful and strangely soothing. And thus, came to life the band “KAASHI”.
And then the master on Tabla known for his intricate rhythms and infectious grin, appeared at their doorstep. Then came the backbone of the band, our very own Bonzo on Cajone. The rhythm section was complete when the young eligible bachelor joined on Bass.
They played in small cafes and cultural gatherings, their music finding an unlikely but enthusiastic audience, bridging the gap between rock enthusiasts and those seeking a more contemplative sound.

Circa – 1991; Relentless Nagpur heat shimmered off the concrete pathways of the Engineering College in 1991.
